This therapy was common practice during the 19th century. Antibiotics and topical ointments did not exist yet, and antiseptics could irritate the tissue and make things worse. As a medical therapy, maggots worked well. The treatment was simple. Doctors placed maggot larvae on the wound and then bound it with gauze dressing. In less than a week, the wound would be nice and clean.
