The FDA's Nonexistent Regulation of False or Misleading Claims in TV ads for Pharmaceuticals

Such is the case in a recent article about the Food and Drug Administration's lax (or nonexistent) regulation of false or misleading claims in TV ads for pharmaceuticals.

Is bread the staff of life?

I don't care what they taught you in Sunday school, bread is not the staff of life. Try living on bread and water for a while and you will see what I mean. In six weeks you will be in very bad shape; in six months, you will be dead.

Don't Forget Folic Acid

I've had a few people write in saying that their doctors have warned them against taking folic acid for fear that it could "cover up" cases of pernicious anemia.

Lower Homocysteine Levels in as Little as Two Weeks

A recent study done in the Netherlands showed that betaine can lower homocysteine levels in as little as two weeks.

Eat whatever you want, stay thin and live longer

What if you could eat whatever you wanted, stay thin, and live longer? Well, some Harvard researchers are trying to find a way to do just that. But is it really such good news?

Dealing with Childhood Sleep Problems

Bet you didn't know this interesting factoid: There are NO DRUGS (prescription or over-the-counter) that are currently approved for the treatment of insomnia in children.

New Hydrogen Peroxide Discovery

" I reported on this phenomenon in my book Hydrogen Peroxide, Medical Miracle 13 years ago. Ozone is the byproduct formed when the body's natural killer cells produce hydrogen peroxide.

The weapon of mass destruction you’re exposed to every day: Eliminate your risk

After 41 years of poisoning its citizens with fluoro-toxic water, one European city–Basel, Switzerland–saw the light and finally banned fluoride from its water supply. The people of Basel were told, just like we were, that fluoride was the be-all, end-all for dental health and that it would save us all, rich and poor alike, from the horrors of a mouthful of cavities. But when they saw the results of a recent Swiss government study, the people of Basel realized they’d been had: According to the report, children’s cavity rates actually increased from 1996-2001. On the advice of their government’s Health and Social Commission, Basel, the only Swiss city adding fluoride to water, gave up the ghost and flushed fluoride in April 2003.

Letters—Chelation therapy: Quicker doesn’t mean better

“The doctor to whom I was referred for chelation wants me to use a method different from that of the doctor I went to for many years. The old method took three hours. He told me many times that it was necessary to give it slowly so as not to damage the kidneys. So I was upset to have the new doctor tell me the new method was just as good but took half the time and so was less expensive.

Do you know about this new method, and do you approve of it?”

Health Notes

1. You probably don’t care much about the hypophysis, but it is the area of the brain that produces luteinizing hormone (LH). LH stimulates the production of testosterone, and I’d be willing to bet that you do care about that…

2. The New York Times continues its anti-alternative medicine stance and they now have a new star. (Has Jane Brody, their long-time, anti-meat, pseudo-vegetarian mouthpiece lost their confidence?) The new Minister of Nutrition Information at the Times appears to be Gina Kolata. She recently penned a feature about vitamins that has the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) world up in arms…

3. With the tragic death of Dr. Robert C. Atkins, and a simultaneous spate of research vindicating his (and my) position on animal fat and protein– the more in your diet the better–I have to admit that I am getting a kick out of watching the former critics back-pedaling as fast as they can. They used to say the Atkins program was “foolish and dangerous” and would cause cholesterol levels to rise “astronomically.” Now they say: “Well, it works but it doesn’t last.”
