Smallpox fears drive more government incompetence
Congratulations, America: You’ve just bought yourself 2 million doses of an unapproved and untested vaccine — and it only cost you a hair under half a billion bucks.
What a bargain!
The vaccine is Arestvyr, and it’s supposed to protect against smallpox. I say “supposed to” because it’s literally never been tested in humans.
All we can say for sure is that it seems to protect monkeys. If nothing else, we’ll have the best smallpox protection program on earth — for apes.
That should make PETA happy.
Smallpox was supposedly eradicated back in 1979, but you and I know that’s a load of bunk. It’s still around, in government labs, and not just in the labs of friendly governments.
Kim Jong-un, Bashar al-Assad, Vladimir Putin, and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are just a few of the guys who have or are believed to have access to smallpox.
That means we’re just one loony dictator away from smallpox being UN-eradicated — and when (not if) that happens, it’ll be like nothing ever seen in human history.
Not just millions dead… hundreds of millions dead, because humans no longer have any natural immunity against smallpox.
So as far as I’m concerned, having a just-in-case plan to protect against it would actually be smart.
But of course, the government can’t even keep the roads paved — so if you’re relying on them to protect you from smallpox, you may as well make funeral arrangements now.
That means it’s up to you to protect yourself (as usual).
Since smallpox has been out of the picture for so long, the options aren’t great — but there’s a homeopathic remedy called variolinum that can help protect against the disease and may even help treat it if you do get it.
You might want to work on your own stockpile… just in case.
PS: Smallpox is small potatoes compared to some of the other threats from terrorists and rogue governments.
